The Work of a Human.jpg

What is my purpose? What am I put on this planet to do? Is it self-sacrifice? Is it to work as hard as I can until the day I die? Or is this life merely for my pleasure whenever and wherever I can find it?

These are questions I have asked myself many times. I think most people - if they were honest with themselves - have moments in their lives were they ask questions such as these. It is good to know that a little over 1800 years ago Marcus Aurelius - one of the most powerful men alive at the time - even wrestled with this. Was meaning to be found by staying in the comfort of his bed, or to arise and do something more? To do the work of a human being.

There are still many days I don't know or understand my how my purpose and calling is lived out, but I know what it is not: It is not to do only that which is comfortable to me - only those things which will bring me pleasure.

My creator crafted me with certain emotions and physical strengths. He has blessed me with a family and a job to provide for their needs. Sometimes doing "the work of a human being" means that I need to awake each day and use those things which have been given me. If at work: work hard. If at home: be present. In all things: lead where there is no leader. If someone is in need: help where I am able. To do the work of a human does not have to be grand, but it starts by throwing of some human comforts and arising each morning!
